Fred Macpherson & Cavan McCarthy

Fred Macpherson and Cavan McCarthy met in 2012 when their bands Spector and Swim Deep performed on the same bill somewhere between their home cities of London and Birmingham. Cavan had spent his formative years playing under eighteens professional football while Fred had cut his teeth as a presenter on MTV2 doing out of studio broadcasts for Zane Lowe’s Gonzo. The two forged a friendship on the road, touring together and internationally with acts like The 1975 and Florence and the Machine, scoring a handful of top forty records between them and playing everywhere from Jools Holland to the O2. In the years that followed Cavan started modelling for Saint Laurent and Burberry whilst Fred moonlighted as a journalist, interviewing British MC’s like Wiley and AJ Tracey for Vice and writing articles for The Guardian and Q.

Having originally bonded over their love of British music and its rich history, Fred and Can would often DJ together and apart, from legendary indie super clubs like Propaganda and Snobs in Birmingham to their messy and eventful ‘TrapAdviser’ residency in London – every Saturday night for the summer of 2016. They started working on their own productions together, helping compile runway soundtracks for new influential fashion houses like Molly Goddard and Shrimps. They’ve recently started releasing music together under the name Low Spirits and DJ’ing at after parties for the likes of Alexa Chung, Bleach London and Wolf Alice.

Their sets vary depending on crowd and event but they feel equally at home mixing classic party hits as they do up to the minute grime and trap. Their musical knowledge traces all the way from eighties new wave and synth pop deep cuts through nineties electronica and indie to modern hip-hop and alternative pop. Whether you want a room dancing raucously or sipping prosecco respectably, they can provide a celebratory selection to suit the occasion.
